A coalition led by Tampa, Fla.-based Moffitt Cancer Center has secured $47.3 million in federal funding to build a radiopharmaceutical hub in the Tampa Bay region.

The coalition, known as the Florida Oncology and Radiopharmaceutical Growth Engine, or FORGE, also includes Speros — Moffitt’s 775-acre life sciences campus in Land O’ Lakes, Fla. — Tampa-based organizations Embarc Collective and the University of South Florida, and New Port Richey, Fla.-based Pasco-Hernando State College.

The U.S. Economic Development Administration grant will fund five projects spanning isotope production, drug manufacturing, startup support and workforce training, according to an Oct. 29 news release from Speros.

The largest share, $16.9 million, will go toward a 130,000-square-foot radiopharmaceutical manufacturing facility that will produce isotopes and therapies for research, clinical trials and industry partners. Another $15 million will help Moffitt build a 120,000-square-foot office and lab building for biotech startups. Both facilities will be located at Speros, the release said.

Matching funds from coalition partners will bring the total investment to about $88.2 million. The projects aim to support about 4,000 jobs in the region.
