Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital named Charles Roberts, MD, PhD, its seventh president and CEO, effective Jan. 1.
“I’m deeply honored to have been selected to lead this institution at a pivotal moment, when emerging technologies are creating unprecedented opportunities to accelerate discovery,” Dr. Roberts said in an Aug. 18 hospital news release. “Meeting this challenge will require collaboration across disciplines, institutions and borders. I look forward to continuing to work with partners around the world to transform outcomes for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases everywhere.”
Dr. Roberts currently serves as executive vice president and director of the St. Jude Comprehensive Cancer Center, and has held the role since 2015. Over the past decade, he has led the cancer center to receiving the “exceptional” ranking by the National Cancer Institute, and has developed and launched large-scale scientific collaborations between St. Jude and external partners.
He will succeed James Downing, MD, who announced his plans to step down in February.
