The National Cancer Institute will need about $9.7 billion to maintain and strengthen operations in fiscal year 2028, according to the institute’s “Annual Plan and Professional Judgment Budget,” published Sept. 2.
Here are three notes on the budget:
- The 2028 budget includes a $1.9 billion increase over the NCI’s fiscal year 2026 appropriation and a $402 million adjustment for inflation.
- “Although overall funding has steadily increased, [the] NCI’s budget has not kept pace with inflation, reducing purchasing power and making it more difficult to sustain the high-quality research conducted at NCI and at laboratories across the country,” NCI Director Anthony Letai, MD, PhD, said in a Sept. 2 message published alongside the budget report.
- The $1.9 billion increase would be allocated across five research areas: $577 million toward strengthening global competitiveness in clinical trials; $384 million for cancer immunology research; $328 million for advancing analytics and AI; $376 million for improving prevention, screening and early detection; and $283 million for cancer research workforce development.
