Minneapolis-based Allina Health reduced benign hematology scheduling timelines by 62.5% after employing a dedicated benign hematology intake registered nurse, according to an abstract being presented May 15 at the 2026 Oncology Nursing Society Congress.

Here are three things to know from the abstract:

  1. Prior to hiring a benign hematology intake registered nurse, the median time between a referral and scheduling was 16 days, and the median time from a referral to a consultation was 54 days.

  2. The referral process varied across care sites and often relied on advanced practice providers and physicians for completion.

  3. After Allina Health integrated a benign hematology intake registered nurse into the referral pathway, the median scheduling time dropped 62.5% from 16 to six days, and the median time to consultation dropped 50% from 54 to 27 days.

The streamlined process occurred alongside a 20% increase in referral volume.
