According to research presented at the Radiological Society of North America’s annual meeting Dec. 1, 20% to 24% of all breast cancers diagnosed among 1,290 women in New York were found in women younger than 50.
Researchers analyzed data collected by seven outpatient facilities across Western New York from 2014 through 2024 for the study, according to a Dec. 1 RSNA news release.
Here are five things to know from the study:
- Across 1,290 women ages 18-49, a total of 1,799 breast cancers were diagnosed.
- The mean age of diagnosis among the group was 42.6.
- Among the 1,799 cancers diagnosed, 41% were detected through screening and 59% were detected through diagnostic evaluation.
- The majority of breast cancers diagnosed among those ages 18-49 were invasive compared to noninvasive — at 80.7% and 19.3%, respectively.
- Current guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the American Cancer Society recommend annual mammography screening to begin between ages 40 and 45.
