Anthem is now covering three surgical meshes for breast reconstruction, according to a clinical guideline published Aug. 27.
DuraSorb Monofilament Mesh, GalaFLEX and TIGR Matrix Surgical Mesh “are considered medically necessary when used for breast reconstruction surgery,” the guidance said.
“We regularly review our medical coverage policies to ensure they’re aligned with credible medical evidence and the latest treatment standards and expert recommendations,” an Elevance Health spokesperson told Becker’s.
The spokesperson said additional data and studies, including one recently published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, informed the decision to include three additional meshes under the guidance.
ABC affiliate WFTS-TV in Tampa, Fla., has been reporting on breast cancer insurance denials, including for mesh, in recent years. It reported how Cigna updated its policy to cover mesh for breast reconstruction in 2025.
Despite calls for insurer coverage, mesh for breast reconstruction has not secured FDA approval.
