The radiation oncology team at Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton (Fla.) Regional Hospital, part of Coral Gables, Fla.-based Baptist Health, has treated its first patient with proton therapy.

The patient was initially recommended for proton therapy by Matthew Moore, MD, director of integrated neurosurgery at the Baptist Health Marcus Neuroscience Institute, also in Boca Raton, according to a May 14 news release from Baptist Health.

After Dr. Moore’s recommendation, the patient’s case was elevated for review and radiation oncologist Anurag Agarwal, MD, referred the patient for proton therapy.

“This milestone is about more than technology,” Michael Kasper, MD, medical director of the radiation oncology program at Lynn Cancer Institute, said in the release. “It’s about bringing together expertise, innovation and compassionate care to give patients access to the most advanced treatment options available.”

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
