Clearwater, Fla.-based BayCare Health System will develop a solid organ transplant program at Tampa-based St. Joseph’s Hospital in partnership with Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine.

BayCare expects to begin performing kidney transplants in 2027, according to a March 31 news release from the health system.

BayCare and Northwestern launched their partnership in 2025, aimed at expanding access to advanced care in West Central Florida. One of the partnership’s first initiatives is to grow BayCare’s physician residency program from 300 to 650 residents by 2029.

Northwestern Medicine is home to one of the most ambitious transplant programs in the country. Satish Nadig, MD, PhD, chief of organ transplantation, and Ankit Bharat, MD, chief of thoracic surgery, recently spoke to Becker’s about the program’s mission of solutions-based innovation.

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
