Cedars-Sinai designs AI to improve cancer surgery technique

An AI system matched expert human reviewers in predicting patient recovery after prostate cancer surgery by analyzing surgeons’ movements during the procedure, according to a study published June 23 in npj Digital Medicine.

Researchers at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai trained the AI system, called Frame-to-Outcome, on videos from 294 surgeries performed by 23 surgeons across four international centers, then tested it on an additional 29 surgeries.

Here are three notes from the study:

  1. The system analyzed video from the nerve-sparing portion of robot-assisted prostate surgery, when surgeons work to preserve nerves responsible for sexual function, and automatically identified patterns in surgical movements tied to patient outcomes.

  2. The system’s predictions of patient recovery closely matched those of expert human reviewers, without the labor-intensive manual review that type of analysis has traditionally required.

  3. The system also identified surgical patterns linked to erectile function recovery and could eventually provide surgeons with feedback on the surgical techniques linked to successful patient recovery, according to a July 23 news release from Cedars-Sinai.
