Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare has opened an organoid core center within its Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

The laboratory, established through the Cawley Center for Translational Cancer Research, is the first of its kind to be launched within a community cancer center setting, according to a Nov. 18 news release from the health system.

The facility will grow patient-derived tumor models to test and identify the most effective therapies for each patient.

“These mini-tumors enable researchers to screen drugs faster, identify new biomarkers and discover which treatments are most likely to work for each patient,” Thomas Schwaab, MD, PhD, Bank of America Endowed Medical Director of ChristianaCare’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute, said in the release.

The facility will build a biobank of tumors common in Delaware, with plans to collaborate with academic institutions and provide access to external researchers.
