Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Justice related to allegations of fraud that occurred between 2014 and 2024 in connection with National Institutes of Health research grants.
As part of the settlement, Dana-Farber said that its researchers misrepresented data and images “that resulted in misinformation about research being published in 14 scientific journal articles,” according to a Dec. 16 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
“Dana-Farber scientists or individuals under their supervision used inaccurate or altered data or images in publications that were supported by National Institutes of Health-funded awards or in grant applications that resulted in federal funding for additional research,” a news release from the institute shared with Becker’s said. “Neither the settlement, nor the related lawsuit, alleged any impact on clinical trials or patient care.”
A Dana-Farber spokesperson told Becker’s it began implementing a series of initiatives more than two years ago — prior to the investigation — to strengthen research integrity, improve data management and reduce preventable errors in scientific publications.
