Researchers at Seattle-based Fred Hutch Cancer Center have developed a free online risk assessment tool for colorectal cancer called MyGeneRisk.

The tool is designed to help people initiate conversations with their healthcare providers about early interventions and lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of colorectal cancer, according to a Dec. 18 news release from the cancer center.

Users can calculate their risk of developing colorectal cancer by uploading raw genetic data — such as data from direct-to-consumer DNA services — and answer a questionnaire about their lifestyle habits. Uploading genetic data is optional and the tool is programmed to delete all genetic and lifestyle information after the user downloads their result.

The Fred Hutch team plans to expand the tool for other cancers and will continue to incorporate genetic mutations to enhance risk prediction, the release said.
