Detroit-based Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care have partnered to study and find pathways to improve clinical trial communication between patients and physicians.
The study — called Ask Questions About Clinical Trials — is led by Lauren Hamel, PhD, co-leader of the Population Studies Research Program at Karmanos and associate professor of oncology at Detroit-based Wayne State University, according to a Feb. 4 news release from McLaren.
Patients receiving care at nine Karmanos cancer care facilities and five non-oncology McLaren care sites will be eligible to participate in the study. Participants will be given a brochure prior to care, and then will be asked to “complete surveys before and after their clinical visit to assess communication quality, self-efficacy, knowledge, distress, trust and whether clinical trials were discussed or offered,” the release said.
The study plans to enroll 200 patients and use the findings to inform research practices and clinical operations.
