LSU Health New Orleans is opening its medical school’s first academic department of radiation oncology and has named radiation oncologist and physician-scientist Puneeth Iyengar, MD, PhD, chair.
The new department will be a major expansion of the school’s academic cancer care infrastructure, according to an Oct. 7 system news release. The department will integrate highly specialized patient care, clinical research and physician education and improve the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center’s journey to become the state’s first NCI designed cancer center.
As chair, Dr. Iyengar will lead development of the academic program, recruit faculty, expand multidisciplinary cancer programs, develop clinical trials, mentor medical students and physicians in training, and help move scientific discoveries into new treatment options. He will also serve as associate director for intercampus research at the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center and practice at University Medical Center New Orleans.
Most recently, Dr. Iyengar served as director of the metastatic service at New York City-based Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
