Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center is offering robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy at its Minnesota and Florida campuses.
The procedure allows surgeons to use a small incision on the side of the breast, which may result in less visible scarring and a more natural-looking appearance after reconstruction. The surgery preserves the nipple and surrounding skin, which can provide emotional benefits for patients compared to traditional mastectomy.
In some cases, Mayo surgeons are also using techniques to help restore sensation in the breast, according to a Jan. 30 news release.
The robotic procedure is part of Mayo Clinic’s broader effort to expand surgical options and improve both physical and emotional outcomes for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment or risk-reducing surgery.
