A team at New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System has become the first in the world to perform a novel liver cancer treatment that delivers radiation directly to tumors through the bloodstream.

The first three cases were performed March 30 using the TheraSphere Y-90 system, according to an April 2 news release from Mount Sinai.

The treatment platform allows physicians to schedule and coordinate treatment plans, dose calculations, product ordering and case management, avoiding the radioactive decay and fixed dosing schedules that typically limit treatment availability.

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
