Dr. Hawkins will work alongside the center’s director, Raymond DuBois, MD, PhD, to further establish it as a comprehensive cancer center. Right now, the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in the state.

Achieving comprehensive cancer center status requires transdisciplinary research and an in-depth focus on population science, research and cancer prevention. Dr. DuBois hopes to achieve the level-up designation by 2028.

Joining the cancer center to co-lead alongside its director, Dr. Hawkins will also prioritize expanding the translational research program to more seamlessly integrate lab research into clinical treatment settings, according to the release.

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
