Omaha-based Nebraska Medicine has begun construction on the state’s first proton therapy system at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, also in Omaha.

The proton therapy system will be integrated into an existing room at the cancer center and has been modified by the manufacturer, Mevion, to fit the space, according to a March 26 news release from Nebraska Medicine.

The $36 million project is expected to take two years to complete.

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will be the only center offering proton therapy within a six-state region, the release said.
