New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health and San Antonio-based START Center for Cancer Research opened a $5.7 million early-phase clinical trial facility Dec. 16 at Northwell’s R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center in Lake Success, N.Y.

The Northwell-START New York-Long Island center includes 14 infusion bays, six private exam rooms, a pharmacokinetic laboratory and a dedicated pharmacy, according to a Dec. 16 health system news release. It is the first Southern Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics site in New York and part of a global network managing more than 800 active studies.

Northwell appointed Geraldine O’Sullivan Coyne, MD, PhD, as system head of the new site. Dr. O’Sullivan Coyne, who recently helped launch START Dublin, previously served seven years at the National Cancer Institute.

Northwell leaders said the partnership reflects a broader push to expand access to early phase trials in community-based settings while supporting more complex modalities such as precision therapies and cell treatments. A second START center is slated to open in Manhattan in 2027.
