UCI Health expands capacity of stem-cell program by 200%

Orange, Calif.-based UCI Health has expanded the inpatient bed capacity of its stem-cell transplant program by 200% after opening the UCI Health — Irvine (Calif.) medical campus in December. 

The inpatient suites are designed to facilitate customized cell therapy delivery and can convert into an intensive care unit when necessary, according to a Feb. 10 news release from UCI Health. 

The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at UCI Health was established in 2020 at UCI Health’s medical campus in Orange, Calif. Led by Stefan Ciurea, MD, the program has treated 385 patients, the release said. 

UCI Health will open a cell processing lab within the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, also located on the UCI Health — Irvine medical campus, later in 2026.
