Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health will expand its radiation oncology program with the addition of proton therapy.

The health system will install the proton therapy system at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and integrate the treatment into existing oncology services, according to a Feb. 17 news release from the health system.

“This approach allows patients to receive advanced treatment within a care environment they already know — with the same physicians, support teams and coordinated services,” the release said.

Proton therapy will be available to both adult and pediatric patients in about two years.
