Urbana, Ill.-based Cancer Center at Illinois has earned designation as a basic laboratory cancer center from the National Cancer Institute.

The center is now the eighth basic laboratory cancer center in the U.S., the first in Illinois and the first facility to earn a basic laboratory cancer center designation in almost 40 years, according to an April 16 news release from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Established in 2011, Cancer Center at Illinois brings together engineers, biologists, behavioral scientists, chemists and computer scientists who collaborate on cancer research.

Basic laboratory cancer centers’ research findings contribute to better understanding of the disease and to the development of novel or improved cancer treatments.
