HHS has launched its third clinical trial initiative in six months, this time aimed at trial design, site capacity and data infrastructure.
The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health’s Simulation-augmented, Real-time Platform Adaptive Seamless Trials program, or SURPASS, aims to shorten trial timelines, reduce costs and lower enrollment needs by pairing predictive modeling with automated, real-time data analysis, according to a Sept. 30 news release from HHS.
The agency announced three additional projects related to SURPASS:
- STACK will use AI to get new trial sites up and running faster, including sites with no prior research experience.
- COMMONS will build national data infrastructure for patient consent and access to regulatory-grade data.
- CINCH will allow patients to share their own health data for research and help match them with suitable trials.
The SURPASS announcement follows the FDA’s launch of its first real-time clinical trials in April with Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania.
In June, HHS unveiled Operation TrialBlazer, a departmentwide initiative that includes the National Cancer Institute’s work to speed trial startup and boost enrollment at cancer centers.
At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
