The Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium has added its first international member, welcoming the Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.

The center is the first institution outside North America to join the consortium, which comprises more than 50 universities and children’s hospitals running a network of childhood cancer clinical trials.

The partnership is expected to broaden access to clinical trials across Europe, with the Barcelona center serving as the European sponsor for studies.

The first European trial will study naxitamab as a first-line treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma.

“Every child facing a cancer diagnosis deserves timely access to innovative treatments, no matter where they live. By expanding our research presence into Europe, we can increase the speed of discovery through advancing and completing studies more efficiently to bring new hope to families around the world,” Giselle Saulnier Sholler, MD, chair and founder of the consortium and division chief of pediatric hematology/oncology at Penn State Health, said in a Nov. 24 news release.
