12 cancer center leaders, researchers elected to National Academy of Medicine

The National Academy of Medicine has elected 90 new members, 12 of which are U.S. leaders in the field of oncology. 

Here are the 12 oncologists and cancer researchers from the U.S. who were elected to the National Academy of Medicine, according to an Oct. 20 news release from the organization:

  1. Omar Abdel-Wahab, MD, chair of the pharmacology program in the department of medicine at New York City-based Sloan Kettering Institute, the research arm of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
  1. John Byrd, MD, director of Pittsburgh-based UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and associate vice chancellor for cancer affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.

  2. Lieping Chen, MD, PhD, professor of immunobiology, medical oncology and dermatology at New Haven, Conn.-based Yale University.

  3. Stacie Dusetzina, PhD, professor of health policy and Ingram Professor of Cancer Research in the department of health policy at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

  4. Robert Ferris, MD, PhD, Lineberger Distinguished Professor and executive director of the Chapel Hill, N.C.-based Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, and chief of oncology clinical services at  UNC Health, also in Chapel Hill.

  5. Wendy Garrett, MD, PhD, Irene Heinz Given Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the department of immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, both based in Boston.

  6. Andrea Dixon, MD, PhD, dean and senior vice president of health affairs at Washington, D.C.-based Howard University College of Medicine.

  7. Rebecca Richards-Kortum, PhD, MS, Malcolm Gillis University Professor in bioengineering and electrical and computer engineering, at Houston-based Rice University.

  8. Eben Rosenthal, MD, the Barry and Amy Baker Professor and chair in the department of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

  9. Michel Sadelain, MD, PhD, professor and director of the Columbia Institute for Cell Engineering and Therapy in the department of medicine at New York City-based Columbia University.

  10. Jay Shendure, MD, PhD, professor of genome sciences and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Seattle-based University of Washington School of Medicine,.

  11. Victor Velculescu, MD, PhD, professor of oncology, pathology, medicine and genetic medicine at Baltimore-based Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
