Pittsburgh-based UPMC Hillman Cancer Center has named Kathryn Schmitz, PhD, and Jose Zavallos, MD, as deputy directors.
Dr. Schmitz and Dr. Zavallos have served as interim director and deputy director, respectively, of the cancer center since January, according to a Dec. 2 news release from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Schmitz previously served as the cancer center’s inaugural associate director of population sciences and was the founding director of the UPMC Moving Through Cancer Program.
Dr. Zavallos is the Eugene N. Myers, MD Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and serves as co-principal investigator of the Specialized Program of Research Excellence grant in head and neck cancer at UPMC.
John Byrd, MD, was appointed director of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in August.
