Colonoscopy follow-up rates by state

Hospitals in South Dakota and Vermont had the highest percentage of patients given the appropriate follow-up recommendation after colonoscopy in 2024, according to CMS data published Feb. 25. Hospitals in Nevada had the lowest percentage. 

CMS tracks the percentage of patients ages 45-75 who received a normal screening colonoscopy and given a 10-year follow-up recommendation to measure timely and effective care.

According to a recent American Cancer Society report, adults younger than 65 now account for 45% of all newly diagnosed colorectal cancer cases in the U.S., up from 27% in 1995.
