The Massachusetts Public Health Council voted May 13 to approve a Determination of Need for Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to build a $50.5 million proton therapy center on its Longwood Medical Campus, according to a May 13 report from The Boston Globe.
Dana-Farber first shared plans for the center in 2025, saying it will be accessible to healthcare providers across the region.
In a May 13 news release, Dana-Farber said the center will be the first proton therapy center in New England to treat patients in a seated or inclined position, using a compact proton treatment system that moves the patient around the proton beam to reduce the center’s footprint and lower project costs.
Construction is slated to begin in spring 2026, with the center expected to open in late 2027.
Dana-Farber is a teaching affiliate of Boston-based Harvard Medical School and employed 13,667 workers and 561 faculty members as of fiscal 2025, according to the cancer institute.
