Richard Scolyer, MD, co-medical director of the Melanoma Institute Australia, the first patient to receive pre-surgical combination immunotherapy for glioblastoma and a “world-renowned” pathologist, died June 7 at age 59, according to a June 26 report from The New York Times.
Dr. Scolyer was diagnosed with grade 4 glioblastoma in June 2023. He and Georgina Long, MD, also co-medical director of the Melanoma Institute Australia, applied techniques from their research to develop an experimental treatment: immunotherapy drugs before and after surgery, followed by a personalized cancer vaccine.
Two of the three drugs Dr. Scolyer received before surgery are now being tested in an ongoing clinical trial in the U.S. and Australia for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
