Maura Gillison, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine in thoracic/head and neck medical oncology at Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, died June 21 at the age of 61.

Dr. Gillison is widely recognized as the first researcher to establish a link between the human papillomavirus and a subset of head and neck cancers, according to a June 26 report in ASCO Connection

“This finding overturned nearly a century of conventional wisdom attributing all head and neck cancers to tobacco and alcohol,” the report said. “In recognition of her far-reaching contributions to understanding HPV-associated cancers, ASCO presented Dr. Gillison with the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award, the Society’s highest scientific honor, in 2021.”
