Adam Bacik was named CEO of the Medical University of South Carolina’s planned $1.115 billion comprehensive cancer hospital in Charleston.

According to a July 8 MUSC news release, Mr. Bacik will oversee planning, design and construction; clinical and operational integration; recruitment; and technology implementation for the project. He has held leadership roles at MUSC Health since 2012, most recently serving as associate COO of the health system.

The cancer hospital, first approved by the MUSC board in April 2025, is envisioned as the centerpiece of MUSC Health’s statewide oncology network, bringing together inpatient and outpatient services, clinical trials, research, education, prevention and survivorship care. It carries an estimated cost of $1.115 billion and is slated for completion by 2030. The board also approved a new ambulatory surgery center and medical office building in Charleston as part of the same capital initiative, with that outpatient facility expected to open by 2028.

“The new comprehensive cancer hospital will not only be a brick-and-mortar facility in Charleston,” Donald Johnson II, MD, chairman of the Hollings Cancer Center Committee, said in the release. “It will also serve as a partner to providers and health facilities across South Carolina. Through those partnerships, we will be able to deliver best-in-class care, treatments and therapies to people close to home.”

MUSC is South Carolina’s only comprehensive academic health system, with an annual operating budget of $10.1 billion and more than 36,200 faculty, physicians, providers and staff.
