Northwell Cancer Institute leader named surgical chair

New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health has appointed Matthew Weiss, MD, as senior vice president and chair of the department of surgery for Hempstead, N.Y.-based Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Manhasset, N.Y.-based North Shore University Hospital.

Dr. Weiss will also assume the role of executive director of Northwell Health’s surgery service line in 2027, according to a July 9 news release from the health system.

He succeeds Gene Coppa, MD, who has served as chair and service line leader for 18 years, the release said. 

Dr. Weiss joined Northwell Health in 2019 and serves as deputy physician-in-chief and director of the surgical oncology program at the Northwell Cancer Institute.
