The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has released updated guidelines supporting fallopian tube removal to reduce ovarian cancer risk.
The updated guidance was published Aug. 20 in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
The move comes after a study found fallopian tube removal can reduce patients’ ovarian cancer risk by almost 80%.
“Common procedures inside the abdomen or pelvis, including hysterectomy, tubal procedures for permanent contraception and non-gynecologic surgeries, offer opportunities for patients to reduce their risk of ovarian cancer through salpingectomy,” ACOG said in an Aug. 20 news release.
