HHS’ Office on Women’s Health has launched an initiative with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality aimed at improving breast cancer screening and diagnostic follow-up for women in midlife.
As part of the initiative, the agencies will examine how screening and follow-up care are carried out nationwide. More than 40 health systems will join a collaborative to adopt evidence-based practices and reduce care delays, according to an Oct. 27 news release from HHS.
The Office on Women’s Health also signed a memorandum of understanding with DenseBreast-info.org to expand access to educational resources on breast density, screening and diagnostic follow-up options. The resources are meant to support conversations between women and their providers, the release said.
The announcement follows the Oct. 21 introduction of the bipartisan SCREENS Act, which would direct HHS to create a national digital set of cancer screening and risk assessment guidelines that could be integrated into EHRs.
