An overlooked factor of childhood cancer

A noteworthy program at Lexington-based Kentucky Children’s Hospital has helped more than 800 patients with a somewhat overlooked factor of childhood cancer treatment: homework.

The DanceBlue Hematology/Oncology Clinic provides school intervention specialists for pediatric patients through the hospital’s Providing Assistance With School program, according to a March 26 news release from the University of Kentucky.

These specialists act as liaisons between school, family and the medical team to secure necessary accommodations while also providing academic assistance.

The program has helped patients from ranging from preschool to grad-school since its inception in 2014, the release said.
