Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute plans to file a determination-of-need application with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to establish a proton therapy center.

The proton therapy center would be built on Dana-Farber’s Longwood medical campus, also in Boston, and will be accessible to healthcare providers across the region, according to an Oct. 3 news release from the institute.

Dana-Farber plans to utilize a compact cyclotron system that decreases the size and cost of proton therapy by moving the patient around the proton beam as opposed to moving the beam around the patient, the release said.
