Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth Cancer Center’s annual Prouty fundraiser raised a record $12,010,204 for cancer research and patient support programs.
More than 4,700 participants, volunteers, donors and supporters took part, marking the highest fundraising total in the event’s 45-year history, according to a July 11 organization news release shared with Becker’s.
“Reaching our $12 million goal is a historic testament to the extraordinary generosity of our community, and ensures that Dartmouth Cancer Center remains at the forefront of groundbreaking research and world-class patient care,” Pat McBride, director of the Friends of Dartmouth Cancer Center, which organizes the event, said in the release.
This year’s Prouty also served as an introduction for Dartmouth Cancer Center’s new director, Roy Herbst, MD, PhD, who formed his own fundraising team. Dr. Herbst walked alongside Konstantin Dragnev, MD, who has served as interim director since October, in what organizers called a symbolic passing of leadership.
The Jack & Dorothy Byrne Foundation again backed the event through the Byrne Match. The foundation previously gave $25 million to establish the Byrne Family Cancer Research Institute at Dartmouth’s cancer center in 2022.
Funds raised through this year’s Prouty will support efforts to reduce cancer-linked PFAS chemicals in the body, AI technology for head and neck cancer surgery, rural lung cancer screening access and a new approach to brain tumor chemotherapy delivery, the release said.
