Former National Cancer Institute Director Monica Bertagnolli, MD, has begun serving as president of the National Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Bertagnolli previously served as the 17th director of the National Institutes of Health and the 16th director of the NCI, according to a July 1 news release from the National Academy of Medicine.
She also served as chief of surgical oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, both based in Boston.
She will hold a six-year term as president while also serving as vice chair of the academy’s National Research Council, the release said.
