A team at Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center has developed a patient education program aimed at improving clinical trial enrollment.

The multidisciplinary team created the program after interviewing and collaborating with kidney cancer patients, according to a Feb. 26 news release from the cancer center.

The program centers on an animated video designed to help patients understand the clinical trial process — including placebo use — as well as inform patients on how to find and enroll in clinical trials. The video was offered in English, Spanish and Russian.

About 100 kidney cancer patients participated in the program, which involved completing surveys before and after watching the video. Survey responses showed “statistically significant improvements in multiple areas of clinical trial knowledge” and “improved perceptions related to the cost and time,” according to the release.

The team will continue to evaluate whether the program led to higher clinical trial enrollment.
