Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, part of Omaha-based Nebraska Medicine, will install the first proton beam therapy system in Nebraska.

The system was delivered to Omaha-based Nebraska Medical Center June 6, according to a June 10 news release from Nebraska Medicine.

The delivery marks years of planning, the release said, with proton therapy expected to be available to patients by spring 2027.

“The large size of the older machines was a barrier in the past,” Charles Enke, MD, chair of the department of radiation oncology at University of Nebraska Medical Center, said in the release. “But the Mevion S250-FIT is more than 50% smaller than traditional proton therapy systems and fits into a single treatment room instead of an entire multiroom facility.”

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
