Outcome disparities among patients with multiple myeloma may be linked more closely to healthcare access than disease biology, according to Cleveland Clinic research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting.
Researchers used data from the electronic health records of adult patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma between Jan. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2023, within the Cleveland Clinic system in Ohio and Florida.
“Published literature has suggested that Black patients may have worse outcomes compared with white patients,” study author Faiz Anwer, MD, said in a June 5 news release from Cleveland Clinic. “However, in our internal cohort, we showed that if patients receive good care, their outcomes are just as good for both groups of patients.”
