Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine’s Canning Thoracic Institute has launched the Lung Health Center, aimed at early detection of multiple lung, heart and bone conditions.

The center was established through a gift from Rita and John Canning, according to a Nov. 20 news release from the health system.

Northwestern Medicine researchers will evaluate how effectively low-dose CT scans — the current standard of lung cancer screening — can detect early pulmonary fibrosis, post-COVID lung damage, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and other conditions.

“The results of these screenings will be studied and published to inform changes to existing guidelines,” the release said. Northwestern researchers predict that implementing a universal, age-based low-dose CT screening, beginning at age 40, would improve detection of multiple diseases.
