OHSU Knight Cancer Group taps Fox Chase chief as CEO

The Knight Cancer Institute at Portland-based Oregon Health & Science University has appointed Joel Helmke as CEO of the Knight Cancer Group. 

The Knight Cancer Group — established through a $2 billion donation from Phil and Penny Knight — will govern the Knight Cancer Institute’s new care model and manage OHSU’s cancer services.

Mr. Helmke will step into the role in mid-March after serving as COO of Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center since 2021, according to a Jan. 26 news release from the university.

He has previously served as senior vice president of clinical operations at Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope and as system vice president for Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Cancer Network. He spent 14 years of his career at Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, including as executive director and division administrator of internal medicine.
