Despite increasing incidence rates, researchers from New Haven, Conn.-based Yale University predict the prostate cancer death rate will decrease by 2050.

According to a study published Feb. 18 in Urologic Oncology, technological advances in prostate cancer screening, detection and treatment will contribute to a continued increase in incidence while lowering mortality.

“When we look at trends from the 1990s to now, there has actually been a steady decrease in prostate cancer mortality despite an increase in the incidence of prostate cancer,” Nicholas Brutus, MD, lead author of the study, said in a March 9 news release from Yale University. “We argue strongly that the main way mortality will decrease is through increased accessibility and screening.”
