The study, published Nov. 9 in Nature Medicine, analyzed data from more than 876,000 people younger than 22 in nine countries who underwent at least one CT scan. The study, conducted by American and European researchers, found a single CT scan increased blood cancer risk in children by roughly 16%.
“Our results strengthen the body of evidence of increased cancer risk at low radiation doses and highlight the need for continued justification of pediatric CT examinations and optimization of doses,” the study authors wrote.
