Physicians at Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Cancer Institute became the first in the U.S. to perform an endoscopic ultrasound-guided microwave ablation procedure on a pancreatic tumor.
The procedure was led by Shailendra Singh, MD, according to a March 2 news release from WVU Medicine.
Endoscopic ultrasound-guided microwave ablation uses ultrasound technology to locate the tumor and deliver microwave energy, destroying cancer cells without any surgical incisions.
The patient was discharged the same day and “has shown encouraging early results on follow-up imaging,” the release said.
