Little Rock-based University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will purchase Proton Center of Arkansas and resume proton therapy services Aug. 1.
The purchase is subject to approval by the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, according to a July 30 news release from UAMS.
The Proton Center of Arkansas previously operated as a joint venture between UAMS and Proton International Arkansas. UAMS terminated the agreement in May and said it was owed about $5 million in rent and salary costs, the release said.
“This deal fundamentally restructures UAMS’s position in proton therapy. It moves us out of a joint venture flawed from the start with too much debt, excessive volume expectations and poor reimbursements,” UAMS Chancellor C. Lowry Barnes, MD, said in the release. “Our new deal is expected to result in much lower debt and a better reimbursement rate. Financial success will be defined as a proton therapy business that breaks even while providing this very special treatment to Arkansans.”
