Coral Gables, Fla.-based Baptist Health South Florida has received $1 million to support research initiatives at the Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute and Miami Neuroscience Institute.
The gift was made in honor of Guenther Koehne, MD, PhD, deputy director and chief of blood and marrow transplant and hematologic oncology at the cancer institute, and Raul Vasquez-Castellanos, MD, director of complex spine surgery at the neuroscience institute, according to an Aug. 17 news release from Baptist Health.
“Dr. Guenther Koehne and Dr. Raul Vasquez-Castellanos are leading important work in cell and gene therapies that has the potential to change the trajectory of care for patients with diseases ranging from leukemia to complex spine disorders to neurologic disease including Parkinson’s disease and dementia,” Jack Ziffer, MD, PhD, executive vice president, chief clinical officer and chief physician executive of Baptist Health, said in the release. “This generous gift will accelerate their research, expand access to clinical trials and help bring promising new therapies to the patients who need them most.”
