Honolulu-based University of Hawaii Cancer Center has received $2.5 million from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to support the center’s Ka ʻUmeke Lama initiative.
Ka ʻUmeke Lama was launched in 2024 to expand oncology care, clinical research and local specialist training across Hawaii, according to an Oct. 22 news release from the Helmsley Trust.
“Ka ʻUmeke Lama is also building precision oncology infrastructure to support genomic research focused on Hawaiʻi’s diverse populations and broadening multidisciplinary tumor registries to strengthen cancer research and inform cancer care statewide,” the release said.
The $2.5 million grant is in addition to the $1.2 million the trust previously awarded the University of Hawaii Cancer Center in support of the Ho’ōla Early Phase Clinical Research Center.
