The University of Miami Health System has launched an AI-assisted program to flag incidental lung nodules found on emergency department imaging and connect patients to follow-up care.

The Incidental Lung Nodule Clinic opened Sept. 14, according to an Oct. 12 news release from the university.

After a nodule is flagged, a nurse navigator reviews the findings and contacts the patient. A multidisciplinary team meets weekly to determine the appropriate next steps, and the nurse navigator coordinates any necessary follow-up care.

“Leaders expect the clinic to review approximately 7,000 chest imaging studies annually, with an estimated 15% to 20% containing an incidental lung nodule requiring follow-up,” the news release said. “Once expanded across UHealth, the program is expected to monitor more than 20,000 chest imaging studies each year.”

The clinic’s technology does not diagnose or make treatment decisions and is not intended to replace low-dose CT lung cancer screening.

At the Becker's Perioperative Summit, taking place September 14–15 in Chicago, perioperative leaders and healthcare executives will focus on improving operating room efficiency, enhancing patient safety, optimizing staffing and driving innovation across surgical services.
